What a day yesterday. I have a problem - if I am stressed beyond belief I do not work toward getting rid of that stress, I sit and stew. So Monday even though I had a MILLION things to do for work and plenty to clean around the house - - I simply took four hours on every project that should have simply taken an hour. I clenched my teeth so much that I have a major headache. And then the day came. We woke up at 5:30 on Tuesday morning, packed up the puppies, and headed to Sun Valley. After our GPS took us up a crazy dirt road, we found the orthopedic surgeon vet place. We went in the room with a very excited puppy. The examination took like two seconds. They put a collar on her and headed out the door, by headed of course I mean that she took off running down the hallway and ripped out of the other vet's hands - very well trained dog. BUT With NO WARNING. We didn't even get to say goodbye. We were still talking to the vet and they were gone and didn't come back. It was very sad.
We had to spend from 9 am to 6 pm in Sun Valley, so with Maddox and Harrison we decided we didn't just want to hang out in the car. We got a hotel that allowed dogs. Maddox loved it. It had two queens and apparently the easiest way to get from Mom on one bed to Dad on the other was to jump across. Which he did about a hundred times.
We drove around the beautiful Sun Valley, which when I'm rich I'm buying a 10 million dollar shanty and moving there. The leaves were turning, there was beautiful fog, and I didn't bring my camera. DANG IT.
Surgery went well for Abbers. They weren't sure if they would be able to save the tooth that had chipped off and do a root canal or just extract it. We were lucky and they can do the root canal, but it's so infected they have to treat that and we will be back in two weeks to finish the root canal. The elbow ended up being worse than expected. They couldn't just scope it, so they had to cut about an inch and a half opening to remove a pretty big chunk of bone that was floating around. They actually sent us home with it. Gross but kinda cool. Then they scoped to other side of her elbow to remove another smaller piece.
We went to pick her up and we were talking to the receptionist and we hear barking. Lots and lots of barking. Apparently she heard us talking and really really wanted out. Let me just say that it was the most heart breaking thing to see her hop out. She doesn't put any pressure on her front paw, she just uses the other paw and her back ones. She was so excited to see us though, she wagged her tail and ran right too us.
It's kinda funny, because they gave her cephalexin 500 mg for the infection at the root of her tooth. When we were eating at FIVE GUYS for dinner and going over all of her stuff, I took out my pills (for a cyst) that I am taking and it's the same stuff :) I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. We have to give Maddox allergy pills we buy at walmart and we bought her glucosamine from Costco.
In the car we were worried about them fighting over space like always, but when we came out from dinner they were just laying like this. I think Maddox knows she is sick and let her lean up against him.
At home my heart broke even more. She just hops along. Cries out in pain every once in a while. BUT she wants to be with us. So if we go in to the bedroom she wants to go into the bedroom. So right now. We are trying to keep one of us in the same room with her so she will stay put. They told us to keep her off her paws for a bit and not to let her run and play for 2 weeks. I don't think they realize how hard that is going to be. She's already playing kissy kissy with Maddox and even runs a bit. She has amazing speed on her three legs.
I love this picture because she is so doped up. She tried to keep her head up, but she's so out of it she just kinda sways her head and closes her eyes.
Here's a close up of her injury. This was taken last night, and this morning it is swollen about double in size. EEK!! She will heal up and be able to walk normal on her leg. If we would have waited much longer, they said the bone would have torn out all the cartilage and the joint would have been bone on bone. She then would have needed a joint replacement.
To some people this seems extravagant, to spend this much money on a dog. And while she isn't my child, she is a member of our family. It wasn't ever an option not to do it.
Tyler was worried Maddox was feeling ignored, but I'm pretty sure he still loves him :)
Harrison's kisses were too quick to capture, but he's loving Tyler these days.
In case you didn't know that I'm stubborn and a bit impulsive, this mattress story will prove it. We've been moving our rooms around a bit to give Tyler a man cave upstairs and me more room for work. Well, we started almost a month ago, before we left for Park City. I've been waiting for help from Tyler to move the heavy furniture. He hasn't wanted to (It's not like he's busy with work, overtime, and school - okay he is). So one day I figured if I moved the bed into the living room he'd have to help me move it upstairs. My plan backfired though. The puppies loved it so much, and with Abby having her surgery, we decided to keep it there so she would have a big comfy place to sleep on. Which she is doing right now.
Maddox watching over his sister.
So amid all this she is hopping everywhere she needs to and only crying a little bit. She is one tough cookie!!
